Contact Dermatitis

 
Contact dermatitis is the medical term for any skin inflammation that results from contact with substances.
 
There are thousand of natural and synthetic substances that can cause contact dermatitis. Among these are:
  • soaps
  • rubber
  • metals (like nickel)
  • household and industrial chemicals
  • cosmetics
  • preservatives
  • perfumes
Contact dermatitis affects millions of people and is the most common skin condition requiring medical attention.
 
There are 2 types of contact dermatitis: (1)allergic and (2) irritant. Because they both can have similar characteristics and be caused by the same substance, it is often quite difficult to determine whether contact dermatitis is allergic or irritant just by looking at it.
